The author of this USA Today article quotes Bill Clinton saying, “Jason’s announcement today is an important moment for professional sports and in the history of the LGBT community.” Using a quote from an influential person stresses the importance the message that the author sending to his audience. It is a technique called “name dropping”. This form of writing establishes the author’s ethos and makes him sound as if he knows what he’s doing.

USA Today portrays Jason Collins coming out as a very positive event. They state that he is “the first active male athlete in a major American team sport to come out as gay”. This part of the first sentence in the article, proving that the author views it as significant.
